Free Advice from a Real Scholarship Judge on How to Win Scholarships

Here are some tips about scholarships requiring an essay:

1. Follow the instructions! Do not write more or less than the directions ask for. Most scholarships are very specific in what they want to see. If they do not ask for additional material like transcripts, do not send them.

2. Spend extra time working on the essay and proofreading it. Even show it to your teachers. It will be worth the time if you win.

3. Keep a detailed log of what awards you have applied for, and don't apply for the same award multiple times if you're not allowed to do so. Scholarship committees already have a lot of work to do; if they keep seeing the same essay from the same person, it will annoy them, and you probably won't be chosen regardless of how good your essay is.
